The plot takes place a little bit before Digimon Tamers where the card games of Digimon are popular all over the world. The setting is Seoul, South Korea where the game is becoming quickly popular with children and teenagers.
There are competition club buildings all over the city; there are eight to be exact. They have all agreed to host a tournament to find out who are the top eight gamers in the city and to challenge others to become better (and buy more of their franchise). The prizes are highly sought after as they are to be given a never seen before pack of Digimon cards, each unique to the person who receives them and also an imported game from Japan that is worth hundreds of dollars.
As each one receives their pack of cards, they receive their Digivices and a mysterious blue card (it actually depends on how they find their Digimon). Some find their Digimon by the game, some Digimon come to them asking to be tamed, and others are protected by their Digimon when being attacked.
The tamer and the Digimon are given a spirit of a Greek goddess or god that complies with their personality, likes, dislikes, weaknesses, or strengths. Their spirit also acts as a conscience, guiding them and lending advice. It resides in their Digivice and will come out from time to time.
Eventually, the Digidestined meet together by luck. They all live around the same area in Seoul, some of them even go to school together and haven't seen each other until becoming Digidestined. As they don't know who selected them and why they have given a Digivice, they begin to wonder why them.
For a short amount of time, they believe their cause is to save their town from rampaging Digimon and to keep peace. This is what is thought until they find out they must fight a force called the Three Fates who control who dies and who lives depending on sacrifices and gifts. The Three Fates plan on moving into the real world to get more power, to control over things that wouldn't be normal in the Digital World.
Under the Fate's command, there are many corrupted Digimon which doesn't surprise the tamers. What surprises them is that some tamers have actually fallen to the side of evil, they work for the Three Fates and their goals to take over both worlds. They have spirits of mythical creatures and also titans, their power is very equal to the ones that the eight selected tamers.
